Historical Achievements of the OIC

on Wednesday, May 22, 2013

The organization of Islamic Cooperation is the 2nd largest organization after the United Nations Organization. It was formed on September 25, 1969 in response to fire-raising attack on Mosque Al Aqsa in Jerusalem by Zionist extremist. Now it has become the 2nd largest organization in the world with 57 member states. The main aim and objective of the OIC is to bind the Muslim countries under one umbrella in order to solve the entire problems of the Muslim world.

The organization of Islamic Cooperation has extended its activities from merely holding conferences of Muslim leaders to covering international trade, business, economy, culture, civilization, education, commerce and humanitarian activities in member and non member countries. The motto of the OIC is to improve the trade and protection of member states internationally.

During the premature days of existence, the achievements of the OIC were noteworthy in the area of conflicts resolution. In 1970 when a conflict broke out between Jordan and Palestine Liberation Organization, the Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Naseer and Saudi Arabia’s King Faisal jointly led the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the Arab League initiative to resolve the clash. Both leaders successfully brought the conflict to a peaceful end. In 1974, the conflict between the newly formed Bangladesh and Pakistan was successfully solved by the Organization.

The organization of Islamic Cooperation leadership also gained confidence on the issue of Ramadan War in 1973 against Israel. OIC leadership also successfully solved the issue of oil restriction against the supporters of Israel in 1974. The Organization also adopted various resolutions declaring the Jihad in numerous fields against the Israeli occupation of Palestine land and to force Israel to follow the United Nation resolutions on the matter.

Today, the OIC has lost its momentum. We would not see any major sign that the Organization is doing the job for which it was established. The United States of America strated a war against Iraq and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation was just a spectator. On wards, the United States of America attacked Afghanistan and nothing was done by the OIC. Daily killing of Muslims in Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine were seen, but the OIC was just also a spectator and it did not try any effort to solve the issue.

Thus, the cancer of killing Muslims spread throughout the Arab States, Libya had seen its worse days, but the OIC did not take any steps to resolve the conflict. Rebels in Libya were supported by the French Air Force and the NATO and the OIC did not move forward to even take a notice of what was happening around and why the French Air Force and the NATO were doing all this.

There are definite weaknesses in the OIC, but it has also gained a bit of success; but generally speaking, the OIC fails to identify and resolve the problems of the Muslim states within the international community.
